Friends of Haleakalā National Park is led by an all-volunteer, hands-on Board of Directors comprised of a group of Maui residents who are passionate about Haleakalā and whose individual expertise enriches the organization.

Elizabeth Speith, President

Elizabeth has been an active volunteer with FHNP for 20 years and has served as a director on the board for several years. She is passionate about service to the community and ʻāina, as well as furthering FHNP’s mission of supporting strong relationships between Maui’s diverse communities and Haleakalā through service, volunteerism, and education.
 

Peter Conmy, Vice President

Peter joined the board last year and has been a longstanding dedicated volunteer with various conservation organizations, including Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge and the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. He has been a practicing orthodontist for 32 years; 28 years on Maui. He is a resident of Kula. Peter is excited to bring his love of the outdoors and extensive volunteer experience to his role as Co-Vice President.

Mele Stokesberry, Secretary

Mele is a retired high school Spanish teacher and serves as secretary to the board of the Friends of Haleakalā National Park, heading publicity and community event participation. She is also a volunteer youth instructor at Maui Ki Aikido and works with the non-profit Somos Ohana Nicaragua, providing health and education programs in rural northwest Nicaragua. She lives in Kula, Maui, with her husband and cat.

Matt Wordeman, Treasurer

Matt has served on the board of directors of the Friends of Haleakala NP for approximately 20 years, most of those as president. He was instrumental in starting and growing the Friends overnight service trip program.  Matt lives in Kula with his wife Ann who is appreciated for her home baked service trip cookies.
 

Andy Fox

Andy is a retired pediatrician living in Hāmākuapoko. He now focuses on volunteering and regenerative agriculture. Andy has been service trips coordinator for the FHNP for over 5 years and counting. Other activities he engages in include operating a small family farm, and as an organizer for ReTree Hawaii. ReTree combats climate change by planting trees. One prominent example is the restored savannah at Kealia Pond NWR – check it out!

Mary Santa Maria

Mary lives in Hāmākuapoko Moku. She is retired from the State Health Department where she was a Public Health Prevention Educator in Chronic Disease, HIV, and Family Planning. Mary has been on the Board since 2008, and currently organizes the monthly Greenhouse trips for FHNP volunteers. She was the spouse of the late Dr. Fern Duvall. Fern is one of the persons the FHNP honors the memory of by giving an annual scholarship in his name. The recipient is required to be studying in a field related to the biology, ecology and/or conservation of Haleakalā National Park’s ecosystem.

Ivy Campbell

Ivy Campbell is a native Hawaiian small local business owner in Wailuku, Maui. She is passionate about backpacking into the backcountry of Haleakalā National Park This is where she finds her quiet grounding in a busy life and world. Ivy is one of the Friend’s dedicated overnight service trip leaders. She is humbled by the opportunity to help restore and protect native plants and habitat with the Friends of Haleakalā group.
