Mahalo to everyone who joined us for our annual public meeting in June! It was wonderful connecting with our community in person. We heard updates from FHNP President Elizabeth Speith and Superintendent Natalie Gates, and we learned about the important research and restoration work happening in the Nuʻu Ahupuaʻa (land division) on the “backside” of Haleakalā.

Woody Mallinson (Resource Manager, Haleakalā National Park) and Scott Fretz (Hawaiʻi Land Trust) shared about restoration plans, where the native seeds we collect on service trips will be planted, how Hawaiian moʻolelo (stories) can be essential components of restoration, and how evidence of ancient tsunamis can guide modern resilience planning.

We were honored to recognize two of our 2025 FHNP Memorial Scholarship recipients, Erin Bell and Kaylee Miyamoto and to celebrate their educational journeys to mālama ʻāina. It was a joy to present their scholarship checks in person!

A heartfelt mahalo also goes to Dakota and the Makawao Library for hosting us and for keeping our FHNP display up year-round, so the community can learn more about the Friends’ volunteer efforts and Adopt-a-Nēnē program.
